The Affili@ Event in Sydney

by Johan Kriegbaum on May 15, 2009

This week I had the pleasure of attending the first edition of the Affili@Syd event and for a first time event I thought it was ok. I didn’t come home with major new insights or ground breaking ideas but I did enjoy meeting great people from the Australian online industry.

I got the chance to speak to some of our own affiliates in person which was great. I normally only communicate with them on email or talk to them on the phone, so finally being able to put faces to the voices was good.
A lot of the talks were focussed on social media marketing, which was interesting but a bit loose. I would have preferred some more numbers and stats but I guess the presenters were more excited about the future possibilities than sharing the actual effect it has on their businesses now.

Three of the major players from the online gaming industry did talks and they certainly knew their stuff. It was good to hear from people who are in an industry with legislation issues and how they deal with that. Being in the short term loans business, we know how important it is to be on the forefront of things and taking the appropriate measures to keep your business in business.

We had a short chat to the representative from Betfair and he had the same experiences as us with offline marketing, which basically is, don’t do it. Good to hear that we’re not the only ones having mediocre results from offline adventures.

All in all I had an interesting day and I hope to meet a lot more of our affiliates next year.
